Weekly Chöd Practice

Event Info

Date & Time:

January 5 - 12:30 - 13:30

Everyone is warmly invited to join our weekly Chöd practice, which takes place every Tuesday. Beginners are very welcome.

Time

  • Tuesdays
  • 12:30–13:30 CET (winter time)
  • 13:30–14:30 CET (summer time)
  • 18:15–19:15 Nepal Time (GMT+5:45)

During these sessions we practice the Tersar Lüjin Chöd from the Barchey Künsel cycle, a practice many of you may already know from our Ngöndro retreats. Chöd is traditionally performed with a bell (drilbu), damaru drum, and kangling trumpet, but you are very welcome to join even if you do not have instruments.

For the online practice we follow a video of Umtse Lama Nono from our monastery in Nepal, which makes it easier to keep the rhythm and melody, especially for those playing the damaru. The video includes Tibetan script, phonetic transcription, and visualization guidance. In some places within the liturgy, verses are repeated two or three times—such as the supplication to the lama, the refuge prayer, or occasionally the final line of a section—to fit the traditional melody.

Chöd is a Vajrayana practice that usually involves certain commitments and transmissions. However, Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche has kindly given permission for anyone, including beginners, to attend and experience the practice. For those who wish to practice more seriously over time, it is recommended to receive the usual Vajrayana requirements when possible, such as refuge vows, bodhicitta vows, reading transmission, empowerment (for example Thrinley Nyingpo or another Barchey Künsel deity), teachings, and pith instructions.

You can join the practice online here:

In person:
