Loving-kindness and Compassion – Although all beings naturally possess these qualities, we don’t always have access to them. In everyday life, we are often overwhelmed by our emotions. In this way, we are not particularly helpful to ourselves or others. However, in its essence, our mind is open and compassionate. With the help of specific “tools,” we learn to connect with our innermost nature, nurture this compassionate core, and eventually bring it to full fruition. The Buddhist mind training known as Lojong is a complete toolkit, full of easy-to-apply exercises and methods to strengthen our compassion and Bodhicitta. By learning to focus and calm our mind with the meditation technique “Shamata,” we create a solid foundation on which we can build our mind training. This simple yet effective technique teaches us to direct our awareness rather than letting our thoughts drive us. As a result, we become able to use our mind in a way that is more beneficial to ourselves and others. An important practice is Tonglen, the exchange of ourselves with others. Mentally, we practice taking on the suffering of others and giving them our happiness.
By changing our thought patterns, we become more aware of our connection to other beings and can treat them and ourselves with greater compassion. This changes the way we deal with our emotions, making us more relaxed, open, and gentle.
Lama Thierry
Lama Thierry, a Swiss “Yogi” who, after twelve years as a Buddhist monk – including 6 years in retreat – now lives in our center, will guide us in this training. He speaks from his own experience, finds lively examples from everyday life that we can relate to, and draws on his extensive knowledge of Tibetan scriptures on this topic.
